Director of Parks and Recreation
The Town of Burlington, Massachusetts is a vibrant, progressive, financially stable community of 23,000 residents located about 12 miles northwest of Boston. Burlington Recreation Department is extremely well-supported by the citizens of the town and is a center-piece of the social, cultural, and recreational life of the community. The Recreation Department offers more than 200 programs each year and is supported by an operating budget of $1,350,000 and a revolving account of $900,000. Burlington Recreation Department is known throughout eastern Massachusetts for providing high-quality recreation programs, services, and facilities for residents of all ages and abilities.
Due to a retirement and a reorganization, the Burlington Recreation Department is looking to hire its first Director of Parks and Recreation. Reporting to a 5-member Recreation Commission, the Director of Parks and Recreation will be responsible for managing the overall operations for the department’s two divisions: programming and facilities. The Director of Parks and Recreation will have direct supervisory responsibility for two full-time employees, and overall responsibility for 14 full time employees and approximately 250 part-time and/or seasonal employees working on various programs throughout the year as well as numerous (approximately 400) volunteers.
Minimum requirements include a Bachelor’s degree in parks and recreation administration, leisure studies, or related field; a minimum of six years of full-time experience in municipal recreation management (at least three years in recreation program management, and at least three years in recreation facility management); certification as a Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) is preferred.
This position is included within the Administrative & Professional Compensation Plan. Salary range is $60,127.35 -$78,226.11 per year, commensurate upon experience, plus comprehensive and generous benefits. This is a full-time position, 35-hours per week. Position anticipated to begin on or about February 2, 2009.
